What To Do If Your Lactation Room Stinks

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

Keep a big shawl with you at all times. You can use it as a cover in a less-than-private space (I used mine in a parked Land Rover in a field in rural Nepal, but it works fine on an airplane or in a shared office space, too), or stuff it into the pump opening to muffle the sound while you're on a conference call.Invest in a hands-free pumping bra. Simple Wishes, Pump Strap, Snugabell, Dairy Fairy, and many others make bras, or you can cut small holes in the nipple area of a large sports bra!At home, practice pumping with only one free hand, so you're prepared ifyou ever find yourself having to hold a non-locking door shut with one hand.Assemble your pump parts at home the night before work so you have less set-up time for your first pumping session of the work day.Put a flashlight app on your phone for pumping in closets and other dark places.Keep towels or receiving blankets in your caryou can close them in the windows to create privacy for pumping.Always keep the pump's battery pack (with fresh batteries!) in your pump bag, for car and airplane pumping and times when you can't find an electrical outlet.Get a tension rod and curtain to hang across the inside of a non-locking door (like a storage closet) it'll buy you a few extra seconds to shout "OCCUPIED!" when someone opens the door.In between pumping sessions, throw your pump parts, unwashed, into a wet bag and into the fridge. It'll save you precious minutes, and lactation consultants say it's safe to do.If you absolutely have to pump in a bathroom stall, I'm sorry. And: keep Post-it notes in your bag; putting one over the http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=breast+pumps auto flush sensor will keep it from flushing. If you're staying in a hotel, repeat the words "FOR MEDICAL PURPOSES" over and over until they give you a room fridge to keep your milk cold. Many doors in schools are not allowed to have locks at kid height; if you are a teacher and this is your life, ask maintenance to install a slide lock way up at the top of the door, where the kids can't reach it.And here's the most important one: Remember that working pumpers all over the world are doing this, too. We're with you, no matter what. And we know that you're awesome.Jessica Shortall is an advocate for working parents and the author of Work. Pump. All week long ELLE.com is looking at theissues surrounding pumping.

Yes, employers DO exist that provide breast feedingemployees with luxury lactation suites, complete with massaginglounge chairs, multi-user pumps, refrigerators, sinks, snacks, and soothing dcor and music. And we're very, very happy for the people who get to use those rooms. Very happy. Thrilled. Not at all bitter.

But most of us have to hack, rig, and fake our way through odd and uncomfortable spaces when pumping at work, both on the road and at our work home bases. #ThatPumpLife isn't pretty, but we're working parents,we know to make stuff happen on a wing and a prayer. So, straight from working pumpers to you, here are my all-time favorite hacks for making pumping work just about anywhere:

Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump, 1-Count

Lansinoh manual breast pump, 1-count is the best gift that a frequently pumping mom should have access to. These are in two forms; the single and the double pumps. Both of these have loads of benefits in that they help one care for the baby on a more convenient way. Each of these comes with four milk valves, breast flange, plastic and silicon flange attachments, capped storage bottles and a bottle stand. They also have a comfortable and strong handle for gripping as well as cleaning brushes and a manual. Before being used, all of these have to be boiled and then washed in warm soapy water and then rinsed thoroughly.

The lansinoh manual pump is easy to use and maintain in that its parts are easy to disassemble and assemble once more. This makes it easy to pack and travel with and also their being durable makes them last for very long times. Additionally, it's designed to cater for all moms regardless of their breast size. One can also control the speed by which the milk gets pumped through the use of its handle. Its being comfortable enough also enables one to work it on without getting tired. Unlike other breast pumps, this works well for those with sensitive nipples too.

To makes its usage efficient, before using the pump, soften your nipples before starting to pump. Softer nipples make pumping more easily. Slowly reduce the pumping speed when finishing up. Also, wipe the nipples with a warm towel after you have 'pumped the milk. When pumping, it's advisable that you maintain an upright posture to make the breasts more able to release milk. Finally, make sure that you drink a lot of water to remain hydrated and able to produce more milk. The lansinoh manual breast pump, 1-count can be purchased in most of the stores, online markets and also in chemists for an amount not exceeding 30 dollars.

Author's http://www.babycenter.com/0_how-to-buy-a-breast-pump_429.bc Bio:

I have been writing for years. Now that I am on my second pregnancy I will be reviewing and informing myself on the current breast pumps breast pumps on the market. I can highly recommend the Lansinoh

http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/lansinoh-manual-breast-pump-1-count

By using a lansinoh pump, one is able to pump out as much milk as possible within a very short time. The bottles provided for storage are as good and preserve the milk for longer times. This milk can never freeze at any time or spill since the bottles are able to maintain balance even when toppled over. With the brushes provided, cleaning is made easier. The only disadvantage of the lansinoh manual breast pump, 1-count is that its silicon top is very difficult to dry hence; one may be obliged to get another for interchanging.

We want breast-pumping rooms, not kegs

So why doesn't WeWork -- a five-year-old company that sublets office space to entrepreneurs -- have one in all of its locations?

That's the question that entrepreneur Eileen Carey is asking.

Carey and her Glassbreakers co-founder Lauren Mosenthal employ five people -- soon to be eight -- including one new mother. They recently moved the team to WeWork's Golden Gate location.

"We were shocked to discover that though there are kegs to pump WeWork beer at every kitchen, there isn't a designated lactation room on any of the seven floors for members to pump breast milk," she wrote in an op-ed on TechCrunch on Wednesday.

"Nursing mothers need to pump three to four times during a typical workday, for about 30 minutes per session. If a mother doesn't have access to pump regularly, her breasts can become engorged, and engorgement can lead to a painful and dangerous infection called mastitis," she wrote.

WeWork has over 29,000 members in 47 locations in 16 cities. In June, it raised $400 million funding, valuing the company at $10 billion, according to PrivCo, a data provider on privately-held companies. WeWork is well-known for its office amenities, including yoga rooms, arcades and bocce courts, which Carey cited.

WeWork did not immediately respond to requests for information on how many of its locations include lactation rooms.

Lactation rooms at work are a federal requirement. Employers must provide a location "shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public." And it can't be a bathroom. (This right to nurse is the basis for a company called Mamava, which has designed a free-standing pod that businesses can set up to offer women clean, safe and functional places http://www.toysrus.com/products/medela-breast-pumps.jsp to pump.)

WeWork doesn't employ the companies that work out of its space, which makes things tricky. It's not technically illegal not to have lactation rooms in its coworking spaces.

But even so, the lack of a room impacts the types of startups working out of its spaces. Solving Silicon Valley's diversity program means accommodating women and those with families into the startup workforce.

"It definitely creates bias and problems for any company working out of that space," Carey told CNNMoney.

Some co-working spaces, like Galvanize, do offer lactation room. (Glassbreakers worked out of Galvanize until it moved to WeWork in July as part of an accelerator program.)

Carey said she first reached out to WeWork on July 3 about the lack of breast pumping or "family room" that offices are required to have. A employee at the Golden Gate office suggested providing a privacy screen, which could be used in a conference room, or reserving space if a pumping schedule was provided in advance.

That's an inadequate solution, according to Carey, given that schedules aren't predictable. Carey said she penned the TechCrunch piece in frustration after WeWork Golden Gate's lack of cooperation. She told CNNMoney she gave the company two weeks notice before posting the op-ed but has yet to receive a response.

WeWork said it promptly responded.

"We took action right away to develop a multi-use space at Golden Gate that can be used for lactation. There was a breakdown in communication to [Eileen] about our plan, which was our mistake," said a WeWork spokesperson in an e-mail statement.

Obamacare: Is a $2,000 deductible 'affordable?'

But what will enrollees actually get for that monthly charge?

States are starting to roll out details about the exchanges, providing a look at just how affordable coverage under the Affordable Care Act will be. Some potential participants may be surprised at the figures: $2,000 deductibles, $45 primary care visit co-pays, and $250 emergency room tabs.

Those are just some of the charges enrollees will incur in a silver-level plan in California, which recently unveiled an overview of the benefits and charges associated with its exchange. That's on top of the $321 average monthly premium.

For some, this will be great news since it will allow them to see the doctor without breaking the bank. But others may not want to shell out a few thousand bucks in addition to a monthly premium.

"The hardest question is will it be a good deal and will consumers be able to afford it," said Marian Mulkey, director of the health reform initiative at the California Healthcare Foundation. "The jury is still out. It depends on their circumstances."

A quick refresher on Obamacare: People who don't have affordable health insurance through their employers will be able to sign up for coverage through state-based exchanges. Enrollment is set to begin in October, with coverage taking effect in January. You must have some form of coverage next year, or you will face annual penalties of $95 or 1% of family income (whichever is greater) initially and more in subsequent years.

Each state will offer four levels of coverage: platinum, gold, silver and bronze. Platinum plans come with the highest premiums, but lowest out-of-pocket expenses, while bronze plans carry lower monthly charges but require more cost-sharing. Gold and silver fall in the middle.

The federal government will offer premium subsidies to those with incomes of up to four times the federal poverty level. This year, that's $45,960 for an individual or $94,200 for a family of four. There will be additional help to cover out-of-pocket expenses for those earning less than 250% of the poverty line: $28,725 for a single person and $58,875 for a family of four. The subsidies are tied to the cost of the state's silver level plans.

Related: I'm signing up for Obamacare

California offers insight into how much participants will actually have to pay under Obamacare. The state, unlike most others, is requiring insurers to offer a standard set of benefits and charges in each plan level. The only variables are monthly premiums, doctor networks and carriers in your area.

For those in need of frequent medical care, the platinum or gold plans would reduce out-of-pocket costs for treatment. These plans have no deductible, and doctors' visits and medication are cheaper. But the trade-off is that they have higher monthly premiums. California has not yet released the premium range for these tiers.

On the flip side, a young man who never visits the doctor and wants to minimize his monthly charge could opt for a bronze plan. A 40-year-old enrolling in this plan could pay as little as $219 a month. But, if he did get sick, he'd get socked with a $5,000 deductible, $60 co-pays for primary care visits and a $300 emergency room charge.

Obamacare provides protection for those who need a lot of care by placing a cap on out-of-pocket expenses. The maximum a person in an individual platinum plan will spend a year is $4,000, while those in the other tiers will shell out no more than $6,400.

"Insurance is expensive. It's hard for anyone who isn't well off to afford it," said Gary Claxton, director of the health care marketplace project at the Kaiser Family Foundation. "But it is good enough that you can afford to get sick without bankrupting yourself."

Whether potential enrollees find these plans affordable will depend on how healthy they are and whether they are currently insured.

Many individual insurance offerings currently available come with much higher deductibles, cover fewer expenses and limits on how much they'll pay out in a year. Plans on the exchange, on the other hand, are required to cover a variety of "essential benefits," including maternity care, mental health services and medication.

Technavio Announces Top Three Emerging Trends Impacting the Breastfeeding Supplies Market in the US 2016-2020

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Technavios latest report on breastfeeding supplies market in the US analyses the key trends expected to impact the breastfeeding supplies market through 2016-2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

The breastfeeding supplies market in the US is likely to exceed USD 2 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of almost 6%. The breastfeeding supplies market is likely to grow as a result of high awareness of mother and baby care products among consumers in the US and market penetration by vendors providing breastfeeding supplies.

According to Brijesh Kumar Choubey, lead analyst at Technavio for general retail goods and services, The easy availability of different and convenient breastfeeding supplies in the US is another factor that will significantly aid market growth over the next five years. A few examples of such convenient breastfeeding products include electric and battery-powered breastfeeding pumps, which are portable and can therefore be used while traveling.

The top three emerging trends in the breastfeeding supplies market according to Technavios consumer and retail research analysts are:

Increasing number of reimbursement policies

The breastfeeding supplies market in the US has recently seen the introduction of insured breast pumps approved by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). According to this act, health insurance carriers will be required to provide breastfeeding pumps to pregnant and nursing mothers. Thus, insurance companies in the country have to cover the cost of these breastfeeding pumps, along with lactation counseling and other precautionary health services.

As a result of this act, most of the leading vendors are focusing on the production of insured breastfeeding pumps. For instance, Medela incorporated a third shift of its workforce in 2013 to escalate the production of breastfeeding pumps due to the sudden increase in demand after the announcement of the approved law by the Affordable Care Act.

This trend is likely to positively propel the market over the next five years, as an increased number of consumers would now prefer insured breastfeeding pumps and the act would also cover that section of the population who couldnt afford to purchase these expensive breastfeeding pumps, says Brijesh.

Innovations in product enablers

Busy lifestyles and the need for convenient and easy-to-use products are encouraging baby product and maternity care manufacturers to introduce products that suit the changing needs of babies and their parents.

Innovations in product enablers in the genre of breastfeeding pumps and associated products have become varied and widespread. To make the process of expressing breast milk easier and more convenient, manufacturers have come up with nursing bras or breast pumping bras, which enable lactating mothers to express milk without the need to constantly hold the breastfeeding pump in place. Lansinoh's hands-free pumping bra is one example of a reliable and popular breast pumping bra available in the market.

These product enablers are becoming very popular, and will further propel the growth of the breastfeeding supplies market in the US, during the forecast period.

Growth of online retail

Brick-and-mortar retailing remains the key channel for the sale of breastfeeding supplies in the US, but online retailing is predicted to grow rapidly during the forecast period. Quick delivery services and competitive prices are major factors for the growth of online retailing in the country.

Major players like Philips and Medela have ventured into online private retailing, which has helped them increase their sales significantly. The growing customer base for online retailing, combined with faster shipping, is expected to impact the market positively during the forecast period.

The top five vendors for the breastfeeding supplies market in the US, as researched by Technavio analysts are:

Ameda Handi-Craft Medela Philips Pigeon

Taking that healthcare tax deduction | Reuters

A recent Census report(here)

"People are cavalier about thinking about medical expenses, because not many people spend over 7.5 percent of income... (on health care), but with incomes reduced, more and more people may qualify," says Bob Meighan, a TurboTax vice president and certified public accountant. "It is time to reevaluate."

Some 10 million taxpayers claim this deduction, for an average of $7,915 each. If you make $100,000 and spend $10,000 on medical care, you'd get a deduction of $2,500, worth $700 in the 28-percent tax bracket.

Your health insurance costs generally don't go here either. Most employees pay their portion of it with pre-tax dollars, while for the self-employed, the health-insurance deduction appears as an adjustment to income that is not subject to the 7.5 percent limit.

What's included in deductible medical expenses? Actually, quite a lot. Doctor and dentist bills, eye glasses and contact lenses, hearing aids, prescription drugs (including birth-control pills), crutches, transportation to doctors' appointments, and nursing home fees.

You may also be able to claim the medical expenses you paid for your elderly parents. To do this, either they need to live with you for the entire year and you need to provide more than half their financial support, or you need to claim them as dependents. The latter is a tougher hurdle on income, but does not require your parents live with you, and would give you additional tax benefits.

Some 3.6 million taxpayers claimed that deduction in 2008, reducing their adjusted gross incomes by a collective $21 billion, according to IRS data.

A LONG LIST

WHO'S A DEPENDENT?

Generally, that would require your https://www.lansinoh.com/ parents to have run through their retirement funds, have income (excluding Social Security) below $3,700, and for you to be providing more than half their financial support during the year.

To qualify for a healthcare tax deduction, you need to spend more than 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income on health costs, as only the expenses above that threshold can be deducted. The U.S. Census has reported that real median household income in 2010 was still below its 1999 peak, so the combination of rising costs and lower incomes could produce more qualifying deductions.

Acupuncture appointments, chiropractor visits, stop-smoking programs, and as of last year, breast pumps, too, are deductible. Laser eye surgery, infertility treatments, and service animals are all deductible. And the list goes on. For the full list, see the IRS's Publication 502(here).

If you're married, the deduction covers medical expenses for you and your spouse. If you have dependent children, their expenses go into the tally, too. If you paid for medical care for one of your older kids-up to age 27-that's included, as part of health reform. Those kids don't have to be on your health insurance, or considered dependents, for you to claim the medical costs you paid for them in this deduction.

For the health care deduction, the big no-no is double-dipping. If you were reimbursed by your insurance, you can't claim the deduction for the amount you got back.

"Most people don't claim their elderly parents as dependents because their parents are still living off their own retirement money, but there are lots of situations where the next generation is providing enough support to do so," Smith says.

shows a decline in median household income; real median household income was $49,445 in 2010, 7.1 percent below its 1999 peak of $53,252.)

If your out-of-pocket medical costs rose last year, or your income fell, it's certainly worth sorting through all your receipts to see if you qualify, even if you never did before.

And if you paid the bill with money in a flexible spending account or health savings account -- which are funded with pre-tax dollars -- you can't count that same bill toward the health-care deduction.

So as you prepare your 2011 taxes, don't forget about last year's medical bills -- they might just save you some cash now.

You might discover that you've been pushed over the limit by a new baby, or simply because you're facing higher deductibles and co-payments in your insurance plan.

Indeed, in 2009 (the latest year for which data is available), healthcare tax deductions were the only itemized deduction that grew, rising nearly 5 percent from the previous year to a total of $79.9 billion, according to Internal Revenue Service data. The amount has probably gone up since then.

With the economy tough and family structures changing, "We're getting a lot more questions on things like, 'does my girlfriend qualify or my parent qualify as a dependent?'," says TurboTax's Meighan. "It's a very important area, and it would surprise some people to realize that they have a dependent in their household."

NEW YORK As medical costs go up and household income lags behind, more people are likely to qualify for healthcare tax deductions.
